Although an audience will merely see Vladimir in thought, and will not react very strongly to this, a reader like myself reading the play will undoubtedly find this direction humorous. The idea of ?using intelligence' should be natural, and I think Beckett is trying to show how dysfunctional Vladimir and Estragon are, how their conversation has broken down from reasonable suggestions, to ideas of killing themselves...

This scene shows how the characters may resemble clowns, quite foolish and clumsy. Beckett's intentions with this scene are to expose Vladimir and Estragon for what they really are, lazy incompetent tramps. I find this scene highly amusing because of how logically silly it seems for four grown men to be unable to get up, and the audience would react in a similar way...
