If any story could show an audience how effectively Hawthorne uses his allegory it would be this piece of fiction. Not only does the veil obviously have a hidden meaning but several statements Reverend Hooper make allows one's mind to ponder about what he's saying behind his "veiled" statements (no pun intended!) such as this short excerpt exhibits quite well:
