In 1674, James was invited to teach at Edinghburgh University. He accepted and was the first person to hold Chair of Mathematics and also was appointed professor of mathematics of that year. Unfortuanatly, he died before he could begin his teaching career at Edinburgh of a stroke while observing Jupiter and its moons though one of his telescopes with some of his students...
